    Microbial Remediation

    Bacteria are almost ubiquitous across most of the earth, in both natural and man made environments, floating through the air, coating surfaces everywhere, awash in the oceans, even present in rocks thousands of meters underground. Your skin is covered with them, your gut is teeming. Bacteria also live in mudholes and hot springs and puddles and deserts, atop mountains, deep in mines and caves, on the tabletops at your favourite restaurant, on all your work surfaces, in the mouths of you and your dog, and pretty much anywhere that you can imagine.

    By one estimate, the total mass of bacteria exceeds the total mass of plants and animals on the earth. They have been around in one form or another for at least three and a half billion yrars, strongly affecting the biochemical conditions in which most other living creatures have evolved. There are millions of bacterial cells in a gram of soil, and five million in a teaspoon of water. They can form stubborn complex fillms on certain surfaces; these are biofilms, and are found even on dry, seemingly clean surfaces in Hospitals.

    The Earth’s soils and sediments also host microbial communities. Diversity in these underground habitats is tremendously high, with estimates of the soil microbial census exceeding 40,000 species per gram. In the soil, researchers have found that microbes are essential for supporting plant life, mediating uptake and entry of nutrients into the food chain, cycling carbon and nitrogen, breaking down pollutants and much more.

    Even the atmosphere has a microbiome, though it is difficult to sample and study. What’s clear is that is that microbes in the atmosphere are everywhere, vary from place to place and can remain suspended for weeks. The atmosphere transports these microbes, either freely or attached to particles such as dust, around the globe, a phenomenon that may impact agriculture, infectious disease, human health, clouds, precipitation and the water supply.

    Microbial Bioremediation is a scientifically established natural tool for the restoration of contaminated areas, both bodies of water and land. It has been used to clear up oil spills, and deal with heavy metal, polyaromatic hydrocarbon, industrial effluent and plastics contamination.
